General Overview of Bluewater Elementary School

Bluewater Elementary School is one of the highest-academically-performing schools in the Okaloosa County School district. It also has one of the newest buildings, as the school just celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The school has achieved high marks – receiving an A grade from the Florida Department of Education every year since 2001. On the last standardized testing results, in the 2021-2022 school year, 87% of children at the school received a proficiency rating of adequate or above in mathematics. 78% of children scored a three or above on the five-point scale in English and Language Arts.

Thanks to the voter-approved half-cent sales surtax, implemented in 2021, Bluewater Elementary will soon receive a series of upgrades to the school building. These upgrades include a single point of entry, a new roof for the school building, a new fence, and a new playground.

Academics

In addition to the standard curriculum taught to students across the Okaloosa County School District, students can learn Italian in conjunction with the Italian Consul in Miami.

Students also use the New Worlds Reading Program in class. The program works to help tens of thousands of Florida’s elementary schoolers read on grade level. The program delivers free books to encourage children to read directly at home.

The University of Florida’s Lastinger Center for Learning operates The New Worlds Reading Program. It began in 2021 with the direction of Florida Speaker of the House, Representative Chris Sprowls of Palm Harbor. Since its inception, more than 300,000 books have made their way to kids’ doorsteps. Students pick a book in English, Spanish, or Haitian Creole every month.

Activities and Extracirriculars

Students have several activities and extracurriculars to choose from at Bluewater Elementary. Children can participate in the Young Astronauts Club, the Tech Team, Safety Patrol, and Yearbook.
