Lockheed Martin donates to proposed Hurlburt AFSOC Museum

The Air Commando Heritage Foundation has been named a partner in a multi-year, $25 million national initiative by defense contractor Lockheed Martin. According to a Nov. 2 announcement, the partnership will provide support for the foundation’s development of a new Air Commando AFSOC Museum planned for the area near Hurlburt Field.

The foundation stated that the museum is intended to preserve and share the history of Air Force Special Operations. Planned for Hurlburt Field’s Memorial Air Park, a location outside the installation’s gates, the museum will feature exhibits on Air Commando history from World War II to today. The organization also intends to include a STEM classroom for students.

The support is part of Lockheed Martin’s “25Forward” initiative, which the company says was created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks by partnering with 11 nonprofit organizations. Other groups involved in the initiative include the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Pentagon Memorial Fund.

“This museum will give people a chance to know [Air Commandos] and understand what they’ve done,” said retired Lt. Gen. Brad Heithold, chairman of the Air Commando Heritage Foundation, in a statement. “We’re grateful [Lockheed Martin is] helping us tell the stories of those men and women and the families beside them.”

Nothing in the press release from the organization noted when this project will become a reality.

An earlier version of this story said that all $25 million was to go to the AFSOC Museum. This was incorrect. We regret the error.
