DESTIN, Fla. – Sinfonia Gulf Coast has announced it will open its 21st season with an outdoor “film in concert” event featuring the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz.” The performance is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at 7 p.m. at the Dugas Pavilion on the grounds of the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation. The event will feature a screening of the film while the full orchestra performs Harold Arlen’s score live.
The production utilizes new orchestral transcriptions of the score designed to synchronize with the film, which retains Judy Garland’s original studio vocal recordings. Producer John Goberman created the concept, which first premiered in 2005. Demetrius Fuller, Sinfonia’s Music and Artistic Director, stated that the format “brings together two art forms audiences already love and allows them to hear and see them in an entirely new way.”
Tickets are on sale at multiple price points, with lawn seating at $25 and table seating at $45. The group says proceeds will benefit its music education and community engagement initiatives.
