GRAYTON BEACH, Fla. — As part of Mid Bay News’ Today on 30A series, reporter Steven Saul spent Independence Day in Grayton Beach, capturing one of South Walton’s most cherished holiday traditions.
“Happy Birthday, U.S.A. Today, Mid Bay News is at Grayton Beach on 30A. The parade held here every year is the BEST parade America has to offer,” Saul said while covering Friday’s festivities.
Thousands of residents and visitors lined the streets of Grayton Beach for the annual Fourth of July Parade, creating a sea of red, white and blue as floats, decorated vehicles, classic cars and community groups made their way through the beach town.
Families filled sidewalks and porches along the parade route, waving flags and celebrating America’s birthday in what has become one of the Emerald Coast’s signature Independence Day traditions.
According to Saul, one of the parade’s biggest attractions was the way participants helped everyone beat the summer heat.
“Photos include lots of family photos, floats, fancy cars, and WATER guns and cannons keeping the crowd cool,” Saul said.
Children and adults eagerly gathered countless parade “throws,” with candy, beads, and other souvenirs tossed throughout the route. Saul joked that there were “lots of ‘throws’ that would make the crews at Mardi Gras embarrassed,” highlighting just how generous parade participants were with the crowd.
The celebration was briefly interrupted when one spectator was arrested and escorted away by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. No additional information about the arrest was immediately available, and the incident appeared to have little effect on the festivities.
Despite that brief interruption, the overwhelming atmosphere remained one of celebration, community and patriotism.
“Thousands and thousands attended this annual parade, and it is a highlight for everyone. Have a great Fourth, everyone!” Saul said.
