Relief After Rocky Bayou Threat Turns Out to Be Hoax

A fifth-grade student at Rocky Bayou Christian School confessed to creating a fake school shooting threat that prompted an investigation by the Niceville Police Department, according to officials.

The investigation began after a threatening letter was discovered in a school bathroom on May 13. School leaders and police immediately launched a joint investigation to determine whether there was a credible threat against the campus.

On Monday, May 18, detectives with the Niceville Police Department said they obtained a confession from the juvenile responsible for writing the fabricated message.

Investigators said the student made a false claim involving a potential school shooting, but authorities emphasized there is no ongoing threat to students, faculty, or school operations.

“At this time, investigators have identified no known motive for the incident,” the department said in a press release.

School officials have since notified families within the Rocky Bayou Christian School system and confirmed that all school activities will continue as scheduled.

The case highlights the growing challenge schools and law enforcement agencies face when responding to threats that may later prove unfounded but still require significant investigative resources and immediate safety precautions.
