On August 18th, voters in Okaloosa and Walton County will head to the polls to elect several new leaders. You might be thinking to yourself, ‘when do we elect county commissioners in Florida?’ or even, ‘what the heck does a county commissioner even do?’ Well, you are in the right place. We’ve reached out to every single candidate for elected office in Okaloosa and Walton Counties in an effort to get you their policy positions – or at the very least, tell you what their positions are on local issues.
In Okaloosa County, only one race – the election for County Commissioner District Two between Carolyn Ketchel and John Fritzgerald Armour will be decided in the general election on November 3. The rest of the races, including the three school board races and the races for the Crestview and Destin City Councils, will take place on August 18th.
In Walton County, several more elected positions are up for grabs. Both of the positions on the Walton County Board of County Commissioners are contested. Incumbents are running again, and challengers hope to unseat them. On the school district side of things, there are two candidates apiece running to gain a spot on the Walton County School Board – it’s a repeat of a very close election that took place in 2022.
Walton County will also see an election to choose a new Tax Collector. This person is responsible for so much more than just tax collecting – we’ll explain below.
Finally, if you plan to vote by mail make sure everything you need is up to date with your respective Supervisor of Election in Okaloosa or Walton County.
With the Exception of the City Elections (Crestview and Destin), county residents get to vote for all of the seats up for grabs in their county – regardless of where they live.
