In a noteworthy achievement, twenty-six inmates from the Okaloosa County Correctional Institution have obtained skilled trade certifications through Northwest Florida State College (NWFSC) during this summer. The NWFSC Corrections Program celebrated the success of fourteen individuals who received Heavy Equipment Machinery certifications and twelve who earned Carpentry certifications.

The NWFSC Corrections Program is a six-month vocational training initiative that offers valuable industry certifications to inmates. Eligible candidates are selected for the program as they approach their expected release date. After completing the program successfully, participants earn industry certifications, including OSHA 10, NCCER Certifications in Core, Construction Safety, Heavy Equipment 1, or Carpentry 1.

Dr. Devin Stephenson, President of NWFSC, commented on the program’s significance, stating, “This program embodies NWFSC’s commitment to providing opportunities for education and skill development to all individuals. These accomplishments underscore the transformative power of education and the potential for positive change and a brighter future.”

The Okaloosa Correctional Institution, a level V facility situated in Crestview, Florida, houses approximately 900 adult male inmates. During their incarceration at the facility, offenders have access to substance abuse treatment, GED programs, and certification opportunities through initiatives like the NWFSC Trades Training Program.
