Eglin General Fires Group Commander. This Is Who Will Replace Him:

In Brief:

  • Colonel Jeremiah Hammill was removed from his command of the 96th Test Wing Civil Engineer Group at Eglin Air Force Base due to a loss of confidence in his leadership.
  • Brig. Gen. Mark Massaro cited the need to maintain good order and discipline as the reason for the immediate removal.
  • Colonel Michelle Sterling, currently commanding the 324 training squadron, will take over Hammill’s position this week.

An Eglin Group will change over command early after General Mark Massaro removed Colonel Jeremiah Hammill for a “loss of confidence to lead and maintain good order and discipline,” according to Eglin Public Affairs.

Hammill was installed as the commander of the 96th Test Wing Civil Engineer Group (CEG) in June 2022 and was slated to end his rotation as the unit’s commander this Thursday.

“My top priority is to take care of our people, the men, and women of the 96th Test Wing,” said Brig. Gen. Mark Massaro in a statement to Mid Bay News, “After careful analysis of the environment at the 96th Civil Engineer Group, it was clear the commander needed to be removed without delay.”

Colonel Hammill is a Air Command Staff College graduate and Air War College.

Hammill’s Replacement

Colonel Michelle Sterling will take command of Eglin’s Civil Engineering Group in an assumption of command-ceremony this week.

Sterling, a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Civil Engineering Program and the Marine Corps Staff and Command College, is currently the 324 training squadron commander.

The squadron provides basic training for new airmen and operates out of Joint Base San Antonio.

96th Civil Engineering Group

According to information from the Air Force, “the 96th Civil Engineer Group (96 CEG) is accountable for all real property and is responsible for assignment of all Eglin AFB buildings and facilities (on and off installation) and for maintaining complete and accurate real property records.”
