Okaloosa STEMM Academy students showcased their historical research on Feb. 27 for the National History Day Showcase. The event featured student projects aligned with this year’s theme, “Rights & Responsibilities in History.”
Students presented work in five categories: Documentaries, Exhibits, Historical Papers, Performances, and Websites. Classroom presentations spanned two weeks, with 19 students advancing to the Florida History Day competition. Judges will announce state winners in May, and top competitors will qualify for the National History Day® contest in Washington, D.C.
“National History Day is more than just a competition—it’s a transformative experience that empowers students with skills that extend far beyond the classroom,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Through research, collaboration, and critical analysis, these students prepared themselves for future challenges while deepening their understanding of history’s impact.”
NHD participants developed writing, filmmaking, web design, and performance skills, reinforcing research and critical thinking abilities. The program aims to prepare students for college and careers while fostering historical awareness and analytical skills.
STEMM Academy Principal Kimberly Nihill Taylor highlighted the event’s role in engaging students with history. “Our students celebrate the rich tapestry of our past, bringing history to life through creativity and research,” she said. “This event honors the stories that have shaped our world and encourages the next generation to articulate their understanding of history.”
